I could do without the cold, but the holidays are the perfect hour to help yourself. All year, we wait for the chance to tell our closest friends and family what we want. We all have a job to do, a self to become. The purpose of life is to discover your calling. The meaning of life is to answer that call. Pick up and pay it forward. You can only give what you got, but you must know what you have first. This holiday, the greatest gift you can give is yourself. In the context of your career, the only work worth doing comes from a place of enjoyment and expertise. You can only be great at that one thing youâll sacrifice everything to achieve. On the road to becoming your best self, the most important question youâll ever ask and answer is this: What is your gift? It took me six months to arrive at an answer. As odd as it sounds, I never considered my calling. Life didnât deal me a deck of cards where I could factor in fun or making a living from what I loved to do. At least, thatâs what I thought. I know now that everyone has the potential to profit from their passion. We all have the capacity to cultivate our genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that itâs stupid. I was climbing up the wrong tree and, for the sake of my career, I stepped off. I stepped back and took the time to answer one question that I will ask you now: Do you know your gift? Now that you know, the real work begins. Remember, your gift is for giving but before you can bestow you must begin. The first step down a new road is always the roughest. Iâve found that the trick to starting up is starting small. Hereâs how you step into the ring and face the dawn of a new day: Train Every pro was once an amateur. Every expert was once a beginner. So dream big. And start now. You will mess up and make mistakes, but such is life. Remember, the longer it takes to fall down, the less time you have on your feet. Be like a baby and crawl before you walk, but go into everything knowing youâll start by stumbling along the way. You have a lot to learn, but thanks to the internet you can access almost anything. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) like Udemy and Coursera exist so you can explore your expertise. Most MOOCs are free, and Harvard, MIT, and Stanford are just a few of the U.S. universities connecting via the digital classroom. Growing your gift has never been easier. Teach Maya Angelou said it better than I ever could, âWhen you learn, teach. When you get, give.â At our best, we are all teachers - your gift is what you get to present to the world. Itâs the legacy we leave behind. What do you want people to associate with you? I like to think of it in terms of your personal brand and your job is to share your story. You have to find a new place to live, youre up against hours of packing and unpacking, and chances are, you have no friends or family in your new town to pitch in and sttze you. Then, to top it all off, you need to find a new job.The job search is always tough, but there are even more obstacles when moving into a new region. Each area of the U.S. has its own preferences and biases when it comes to hiring and they can impact women, especially. If you go into the job search without knowing what these unique preferences are, it will be a lot harder to succeed.Luckily, our latest research dug into how hiring managers make decisions about female job seekers.We showed hiring professionals across the country different images of professional women. These women differed in their race, body shape, age, hairstyle, clothing, and demeanor. We then asked respondents to choose three adjectives they felt best described each woman, as well as list their top five choices of who they would consider hiring. Finally, we asked the respondents to pick the top three qualities they look for when assessing candidates in general.The results showed interesting differences between various regions of the country. By understanding what hiring professionals from different areas are looking for, you can better prepare for the job search.Lets look at four different regions of the U.S. and how some of their preferences might affect where you look for a new jobThe NortheastIncludes CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VTFocus on your skill setHiring professionals from the Northeast were the least likely to list friendliness as a hiring priority. Just 37.21 percent said candidates who are friendly stand out to them. This doesnt mean you shouldnt be polite or relatable during the job bewerberinterview. Rather, it means you need to focus on highlighting your skills whe n applying for a job in this region instead.For example, if the interviewer asks you about your personal hobbies, find a way to tie that activity back to your professional skill set. Then your interviewer can get to know you as a person but also see how youre right for the job.Remember, when youre discussing your professional experience, come equipped with numbers. Showing real data will support what you say about your skills and abilities. Fifty percent of these respondents said this quality was important to them.If youre going into an interview in the South, take the time to talk yourself up. Before you go into the meeting, make a list of all your positive qualities. Recognizing all you have to offer will help you walk into the interview with your head held high.Some other tricks to try are standing up straight and being mindful of your hand gestures and eye contact. Even if youre nervous, good posture will make you appear more confident. This will encourage them to take your responses seriously and perceive you as more professional.The MidwestIncluding IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, OK, SD, WIMind your Ps and QsThe Midwest is known for being friendly and polite. Unsurprisingly, hiring professionals from this region look for these qualities when interviewing candidates. The top priority was professionalism for 76.32 percent of Midwestern respondents. This was more than any other region.It was also more likely than other areas to list friendliness. The Midwesterners were the only group to have that trait in their top three, with 46.71 percent selecting it.In a job interview in the Midwest, take the time to form a connection with your interviewer. Re search who they are and what their interests are before meeting. Tips For Dealing With Workplace Harassment, Even When You Dont Know If A Line Has Been Crossed This presidential election has brought the harsh reality of sexual harassment in the workplace to the forefront of the news cycle. At PowerToFly were a company on a mission to increase employment opportunities for women with businesses that practice diversity and inclusion. So were glad this conversation is happening across our social feeds, amongst our friends and on our favorite news shows. In the belastung few weeks, millions of women have come forward with stories about harassment at the office, on the street and in their own homes.Of the 100,000 women on the PowerToFly platform, we can estimate that 33,000 to 50,000 of them have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace, based on two surveys we conducted from 2015 and 2016, respectively. A separate survey by the Guardian estimates that only 25% of women experiencing sexual harassment have reported their harassers.One thing we talk about at PowerToFly is where do you draw the line? Over the last few weeks politicians, our friends, our family members have all had different opinions on what constitutes as language condoning sexual assault. And thats a major problem with sexual harassment in the workplace. Women often rationalize that a line might not have been crossed not because the line welchesnt crossed, but because theyre wary of reporting cases that society has dismissed time and time again. Overt sexual harassment is clear, but its the comment you might get once a month from a coworker about your outfit or feedback in a meeting that starts to make you realize youre being discriminated against because of your sex.What Do WeDo?The first step to pushing back at work is awareness. PowerToFlys Cofounder and President, Katharine Zaleski recently told Forbes.comOne of the things that women struggle with most at work is that they dont have other people recognizing whats happened to them. Your babo says something very creepy to you and you look around the room and everybody pretends it never happened. That was what was happening in the Donald Trump situation but now you have millions of women who are coming out and saying Hey, were pretty sure this happened but the reason were pretty sure this happened is because it happened to us. Thats whats happening here.Katharine recently discussed the importance of being aware for your colleagues while interviewing Maxine Williams, the Head of Global Diversity at Facebook. Maxine talked about how every Monday she meets with new Facebook hires to teach them how transparency and awareness is the first step to building an inclusive environment where pervasive issues like sexual harassment can be tackled immediately. Maxine also discussed how people find allies at Facebook individually or through circles which she says are groups of pairs supporting each other. We also know of situations where your harasser is your boss. Here are some tipsIf you can safely confront the harasserTell them to stop. Tell them what theyre doing is harassment and making you feel uncomfortable. Do it in front of other people if that makes you feel mora comfortable.We know this is an incredibly difficult conversation to have, and being confrontational about this kind of inappropriate behavior is as scary as the harassment. Again, if you feel safe doing so, here is some language you can useIt makes me uncomfortable when you discuss my appearance. Please stop making these kinds of comments.Your comments about my sex life are inappropriate and unprofessional. This is not up for discussion, so stop raising it.If you feel unsafe, and physically or verbally underthreatGo to the police immediately. You can file a police report, and even request a temporary restraining order.Language you could useIm bei ng harassed by a coworker and feel unsafe. I want to file a police report and learn about options to keep me safe from their behavior.If you do have an HR departmentReport it immediately. Bring documentation of any kind??emails, eyewitnesses, dates and times of specific incidents.Language you could useCoworker has made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe working here with their behavior and actions towards me. I want to report the harassment Ive been subjected to by them.If you dont have an HR departmentTell your supervisor (if they are not your harasser), the CEO, anyone in a position of power. Tell a trusted coworker and ask them to come with you when you report it. Whoever makes key decisions in the company is a good point of contact to make a complaint.Language you could useBecause we dont have an HR department, I want to report to you that Im being harassed by coworker and I feel uncomfortable and unsafe working with him/her. I need your help as well as the companys.If your harass er is yourbossTell their boss (if there is one). Tell anyone in a position of power at the company??even a subordinate to a boss can have a position of power within the framework of a company.Language you could useBecause boss is my boss, Im reporting his/her harassment of me to you. Pr oject managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Thats why we created a new visualization breaking down the top 50 best jobs in America according toU.S. News World Report.U.S. News developed its ranking of the best jobs by taking into account a variety of factors. They considered work-life balance, stress levels, and room for long-term career advancement. We took the top 50 and narrowed the focus to the two key things that really matter, compensation and projected job growth. We maintained the same order from 1 to 50, but our approach reveals that high job growth doesnt necessarily equate to high salaries, especially when there are low barriers to entry.Heres what we mean. All of the occupations at the top of the ranking generate six-figure inc omes with the exceptions of statisticians ($84.1k) and occupational therapists ($83.2k). There are several jobs in themedical field where applicants can expect to earn substantially more than $200,000, including orthodontists, obstetricians and surgeons. But look at the orange bars, which indicate how many new jobs researchers expect will be created in the coming years.
